Santa Maria del Suffragio — 17th Century, Oil on Canvas, Monterubbiano, Italy
Commissioned by the Confraternita di Santa Maria del Suffragio and carried out under the authority of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Artistici e Storici delle Marche.
The painting exhibited significant deterioration affecting both the pictorial layer and the canvas support, largely due to the challenging environmental conditions within the church as high humidity levels combined with pronounced seasonal thermal fluctuations. The major issues were the loss of proper canvas tension, structural deformation, several paint layer lifting, flaking and localized loss of original material and the oxidation of varnish with heavy surface deposits obscuring legibility.
A full lining treatment was undertaken, applying a new compatible canvas to stabilize the original support and consolidate the entire paint layer. This structural intervention was essential given the large dimension of the painting. A new expandable stretcher with a mechanical spring self-adjusting system was installed. This allows consistent tension control over time, minimizing the need for future manual adjustments and responding more effectively to environmental fluctuations.
Cleaning involved the controlled reduction of oxidized varnish layers and removal of accumulated deposits, restoring chromatic depth and compositional clarity. Chromatic reintegration was carried out using reversible conservation materials, strictly respecting the original surface. It was executed without overlapping intact original paint and remains discernible upon close examination, in accordance with conservation ethics.
