Rodrigo Echeverri Calero — “Disección de un Cajón”
Mixed Media, Paris, Private Collection
Rodrigo Echeverri Calero is a contemporary artist whose work engages with fragmentation, structure, and material tension. Using unconventional supports and constructed forms, his practice integrates physical structure as an essential part of the visual language, making material integrity central to both the artwork and its conservation.
This artwork, belonging to a private collector in Paris, sustained severe structural damage during transport. The artwork was broken into two separate sections as a result of impact. The work consisted of compressed cardboard reinforced on the reverse with metal bar supports — elements that had themselves been displaced and deformed by the accident. The conservation strategy was developed reassembling the fractured structure and aligning from the front-facing surface to ensure perfect correspondence of levels and planes. Appropriate conservation adhesives were used in combination with specially adapted clamping systems designed to distribute pressure evenly without causing further stress.
After stabilization of the visible surface, the metal bar reinforcement on the reverse was reinstated to restore structural integrity. Damaged angular edges were gradually reshaped using diluted conservation adhesives and precision clamping. Areas of loss were filled, textured where necessary, and visually reintegrated using illusionistic retouching in paint techniques to recover continuity of form.
The intervention allowed the artwork to return safely to display conditions, maintaining both its conceptual presence and physical stability.
